Welcome to the ACVSc Radiology Chapter Website

The Radiology Chapter offers examinations at Membership and Fellowship levels and participates in the ACVSc Science Week Program.

Examination at Membership level is provided for the general practitioner with a strong interest in radiology. Paper One examines the physics of radiology and basic sonology. Paper 2 examines aspects of radiographic image interpretation of dogs, cats and horses. Small animal practitioners should not be alarmed by the equine component as the principles are similar for all species. Following the written papers there is a film reading examination where candidates are required to write radiology reports for a series of radiographic cases and a 1 hour oral examination consisting of oral film reading and questions relating to radiology, radiography and procedures such as radiographic contrast studies. Note that the written and oral film reading examinations relate to radiology of dogs, cats and horses. It does not include sonology, cross sectional imaging or scintigraphy. It is strongly advised that potential candidates organise a mentor to assist examination preparation. The Chapter can you assist with this process.

Examination at Fellowship level requires the candidate to have Membership in Radiology and to have completed an approved three year supervised training program (residency) in diagnostic imaging. The Fellowship examination is focused on the practitioner wishing to gain specialist qualifications in imaging. Papers 1 and 2 are similar in structure to membership examinations however examine in greater detail and are extended to include further sonology and CT, MRI and scintigraphy. Report writing is assessed with a 3 hour practical examination which may include radiographic, CT, MR, scintigraphic and sonographic studies. Verbal reporting skills are assessed during a 2 hour oral examination.

Prior to enrolling in Membership examination potential candidates are encouraged to read the ACVSc's publication: The Red Book- Advice to Membership Candidates and the Radiology Chapter Guidelines for Membership Examination. Potential Fellowship Candidates must read The Blue Book- Advice to Fellowship Candidates and the Radiology Chapter Guidelines for Fellowship Examination

On this site you will find advice on how to write a radiology report and recommended reading material. Also included are a number of cases with examples of reports so that candidates for Membership exam may gain an insight to the type of report required for Membership examination.
